La Cañada Unified enrollment near target as school year opens; many permit students remain within board cap

District officials noted several adjustments affecting calculated average daily attendance (ADA): the district counts certain nonpublic-school students covered by Individualized Education Programs (IEPs), and staff said eight such students were included in ADA calculations, which the superintendent said produced a total ADA figure cited as 4,003.
Permit and cap details: The superintendent said the district’s total permit student population sits at the board-established cap of 15% districtwide. She provided counts for categories of permit students: 294 students to move with territory transfer from Sagebrush, 68 on grandparent legacy permits, approximately 187 employees’ children on employee permits, and 312 students enrolled via parent or guardian employment at JPL.
Why it matters: Staff said maintaining enrollment near the 4,000 target preserves program offerings, AP courses, electives, athletics and efficiency in the district budget. The superintendent framed current numbers as within expected ranges and said staff will continue monitoring enrollment through the state’s P-1 reporting date.
