Superintendent Dr. Cole reported a “smooth kickoff to the school year” and outlined district efforts to boost on-time attendance, expand weekly food-distribution sites and introduce new administrators during the Moreland School District Board of Trustees meeting.
Dr. Cole said the district welcomed ‘‘Fran, Jen Latir, Joseph, and Vince’’ as recent leadership hires and thanked Human Resources for delivering breakfast burritos to sites on the first day. She told trustees that sports seasons for boys’ basketball and cross country had begun and that back-to-school nights at several campuses had been well attended.
The superintendent emphasized an attendance campaign the district will run during the year, saying, “Did you know that students missing as few as 2 days per month adds up to nearly a full month of learning loss.” She said staff will work with families to identify reasons for absences rather than assume causes and that the district’s education services team will study patterns across grade levels.
Dr. Cole described an expanded partnership with West Valley Community Services to increase access to the district’s Park It Market program. She said the district rearranged space so West Valley can store and distribute food, and that a new market at Latimer will begin this week. The markets are described as being run with a “farmer’s market” model intended to preserve dignity for users; dates and rotation schedules are posted on the district website.
Trustees and staff also noted outreach programs such as the president’s council kickoff, school-site openers planned for the September meetings and Title I engagement efforts. Several trustees praised student leadership: eighth-grade students Aline and Myra and senior student Oscar led the evening flag salute and described leadership activities such as sixth-grade orientation, color-team “roar outs” and monthly lunch competitions.
The superintendent closed by reminding the community of Labor Day weekend school closures and upcoming presentation schedules for opening-of-school reports at the board’s September meetings.
