The La Cañada Unified School District reported new staff training and an updated student AI pledge as part of a districtwide strategy to introduce responsible use of artificial intelligence in classrooms.
District technology leaders said they offered elective sessions for teachers during pre-service training that demonstrated AI-enabled features in existing educational technology tools; the sessions focused on bias, hallucination risk and classroom applications. Staff also described a program-wide effort to pare redundant EdTech subscriptions acquired during the pandemic and train teachers on four priority tools.
Student measures: The district updated its student AI pledge, carried in the student handbook, to include two new elements: guidance on privacy and data sharing, and language about the environmental impact of AI use. Staff said this addition was prompted in part by student interest, and the pledge also stresses critical-thinking skills in light of emerging research on AI’s effects.
Why it matters: Staff emphasized an “education-first” approach — teaching students to be informed consumers of AI tools and to weigh whether AI adds value versus standard search tools — and highlighted a plan to embed targeted K–12 lessons on AI and digital literacy into the curriculum.
Next steps: Staff said they will continue follow-up teacher sessions, develop targeted lessons for students, and coordinate AI-related pedagogy with Challenge Success and other district initiatives addressing student well-being and engagement.
