County amends code to rename and clarify public camping rules, delegates event permits to parks and tourism staff

St. Lucie County commissioners on Aug. 5 adopted an ordinance amending Article 4 (public property) of the county code to rename and clarify rules about camping and to formalize permitting for group events on county property.
Assistant County Attorney Jean Stacio told the board the ordinance updates Section 32‑90 — renaming it from "overnight camping" to "public camping and sleeping" — to conform county code to a cited Florida statute and to add explicit exclusions for county‑designated camping and RV sites. The ordinance also revises sections governing group functions and permits, and it creates a new Section 32‑103 defining the county fairgrounds, describing permitted uses and establishing a permitting process.
The ordinance delegates permitting authority for group functions on county property to the Parks & Recreation director and grants the tourism director authority to issue event permits for fairgrounds use. Commissioners asked staff to clarify formatting and presentation of the ordinance title (to separate the distinct amendments so they would be clearer to the public); staff agreed and the board approved the ordinance with that minor change.
The ordinance includes standard severability, filing and codification language; staff recommended approval and the board approved on the evening's vote.
