Nottoway emergency services outlines grants, radio upgrades and recruitment push

Nottoway County—s emergency services director reported multiple operational upgrades and grant efforts while urging continued board support for radio-system and EMS improvements.
Director Buddy Hyde told the board the department currently manages seven active grants and one pending larger appropriation the county has asked state legislators to track. Hyde said he is seeking a county letter to Delegate John McGuire and state senators on the pending appropriation.
Hyde said school buses now have dual-band radios purchased with a grant so buses can transition to a new county radio system without losing connectivity; the county plans dual-band operation during the cutover. He also said county fire and EMS personnel will take part in a recruitment photo shoot to create marketing materials for retention and recruitment, and that a new EMS contract draft will be circulated to local providers with the aim of moving the item toward a board vote in September.
Hyde presented an award the department received: the Lexipol Connect 2024 silver award for online training management. He said the county uses Lexipol and other platforms to support continuing training for firefighters and EMS staff.
Hyde asked the board to consider helping the county follow up on a pending $1,000,000 state appropriations request that would fund a second major EMS grant; board members said they would contact state legislators and agreed staff will draft a letter.
Hyde also briefed the board on regional interoperability talks with neighboring counties and the state interoperability coordinator and said a draft EMS contract and an updated EMS response plan are being prepared to present to the board in the coming month.
