Parks and Recreation reports strong summer participation, senior center and pool usage high

The Parks and Recreation Department reported high participation in summer programs and several park projects nearing completion during the commission’s monthly meeting.
Mister Smitherman, recreation division staff, told commissioners that from June 1 through the end of July the department logged 4,283 registered program participants and about 8,863 recreational swim visits; lap swim attendance totaled about 2,505 during the same period. He said the senior center is averaging roughly 460 unduplicated visitors per month.
Operations staff reported that DeJoy Pocket Park and Taylor Pocket Park are open and seeing heavy daily use. Angela Osland, operations division staff, said the dog park at Carmen Triangle is under construction and the department expects it to open in December. Adam Basin Park has been renovated and staff anticipate opening seeded areas around September 15.
Commissioners and members of the public praised staff for event management and outreach; multiple speakers noted the popularity of concerts in the park and National Night Out. Several commissioners relayed constituent feedback: requests for additional benches at pocket parks and a patron question about food use at reserved pool tables during birthday parties. Staff said they would follow up on scheduling and rules for food at pool reservations.
No formal actions were taken. Staff said they will continue program delivery and return with operational details and any recommended policy changes for facility use if needed.
