City manager outlines Maple Street closure, DPW bid items and wastewater plant schedule

During the Aug. 18 meeting, the City Manager told the Mason City Council that the Maple Street culvert replacement will require a full closure beginning Sept. 29 and is expected to run through late November, with restoration work continuing in spring.
The manager also reported that the bid packages for the Department of Public Works facility are complete and will be published this week. Bids will include a separate line item for reroofing; staff said the current roof has a projected remaining life of 10 to 15 years, and the council may request pricing for a steel roof versus other materials. The manager noted the reroofing and an outside storage facility (used by police and fire) will be separate line items so the council can remove them if desired.
On the wastewater treatment plant, the manager said the facility will be "turned on" in November, meaning the new plant must be fully functioning at that point; commissioning, testing and some demolition will continue afterward and could extend another six to nine months depending on sequencing and site work constraints. Staff warned that demolition cannot proceed until the plant is ready to assume operations and that electrical connections and SCADA testing will take additional time.
The manager also alerted the council that, because of the November election, the council will likely need to reschedule the regular meeting to the Wednesday following the election; a formal proposal to change the meeting date will appear on a future agenda.
Council members asked whether the current DPW roof is steel and whether the new roof would be steel; staff said the current roof is not steel and that pricing for different roofing options can be included in the bid documents if the council wants that comparison.
