Parks and Recreation seeks field repairs, mowers and parking for Rock Creek gym project

Parks and Recreation Director Matt outlined capital and operating requests tied to facility upkeep and an anticipated Rock Creek gym project. He told commissioners the department seeks money for tee-ball field regrading and sodding, replacement of two aging finishing mowers, and seal-and-stain work on county pavilions and wooden park structures.

Matt said Rock Creek’s planned new gym will create a need for additional parking beside the maintenance shop and asked the board to include a parking allocation to “get ahead of the curve” when the gym comes on line. Commissioners discussed project timing — whether parking construction should be budgeted for 2026 or 2027 — and Matt said the bid and final cost will determine when the work would proceed.

The department removed a previously requested reception-office upgrade at Rock Creek after facilities staff offered to reuse materials and handle the work. He also noted revenue from lake-park kiosks and pavilion rentals totaled just over $18,000 through August, which offsets some lake-park costs.

Operating requests included modest increases in property repairs and maintenance, equipment rental, dues and fees (related to wrestling and track participation), and additional contract labor for sports officials. Matt also asked for an increase in seasonal hours for lifeguards and concession workers and said he will discuss job-title adjustments and HR classification changes with HR before finalizing those numbers.

No formal appropriation decisions were taken at the session; commissioners asked staff to confirm timing and funding sources for parking and other capital items before final budget adoption.
