Jackson Public Schools staff said they provided on‑site support at the Blossom Apartments on Aug. 13 after reports of water outages and deteriorating living conditions affecting families with JPS scholars.
Tiffany Jones, McKinney‑Vento manager, told the board that district teams—including enrollment services, dropout prevention and campus enforcement—worked with identified families to register scholars, distribute supplies (backpacks, school supplies, hygiene kits and cleaning items) and confirm attendance. Jones said staff initially identified four to five families with JPS scholars through a housing task force contact and, because some families lacked transportation, determined on‑site support was warranted.
Jones described a coordinated response: by about 1:30 p.m. a JPS convoy accompanied by Sergeant Jamieson arrived at the complex. Teresa Coleman completed registration for one senior and her siblings; by the next day district staff confirmed affected scholars were attending school. McKinney‑Vento social workers named in the presentation included Cassandra Peterson, Roxanne Washington, Roxanne Robinson and Lakita Jackson. Dropout prevention team members assisting with logistics included Nicholas Johnson, Caleb Blake and Fabian Wilson.
Superintendent Dr. Green praised the unsolicited response by the teams and said the district would continue follow‑up through McKinney‑Vento points of contact at each school to support academic and social‑emotional needs and to make external referrals as necessary.
Board members and others thanked staff publicly during the meeting; Representative Chris Bell presented a House resolution honoring Dr. Sarah Harper earlier in the meeting, which attendees noted as a separate recognition.
