Washington Terrace council schedules emergency-prep open house, hears waterline and school updates; approves agenda and adjourns to RDA

Fall cleanup and public services Staff proposed changing the November fall-cleanup collection schedule to be open Monday–Friday from 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. and Saturdays 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. for the full month, with closures on Thanksgiving Day and the day after Thanksgiving. City staff said last year’s limited after-hours use suggested turnout might be small, but council members supported extended Saturday hours to accommodate residents who cannot come during weekday hours.

Emergency-preparedness planning The council approved advertising and outreach for an emergency-preparedness open house on Oct. 2, 6–8 p.m., at the fire station. Staff said the city is working with the Red Cross and local faith-based organizations to identify and evaluate evacuation-center facilities; the United Methodist Church has agreed to serve as a primary evacuation location pending facility evaluation with the Red Cross. Staff noted some faith-based locations (including certain LDS meetinghouses) have limits — for example, a lack of shower facilities — that will influence what services they can provide during an evacuation.
