The Shakopee City Council removed an item from the consent agenda and voted to award a civil engineering contract to Houston Engineering for work on a downtown project, with a not-to-exceed amount of $35,000.
City staff explained the earlier civil engineer (SEH) stopped being responsive and had a staff change, creating delays on the project. Kirschke told the council the city had an architect (Miller Dunwoody) and Confluence handling landscaping; the outstanding civil work needed a responsive firm to complete the final engineering.
Kirschke said the original contract figure with SEH had been roughly $16,000 but the city had not paid that firm and was not adding $35,000 on top of anything already paid: “The new contract’s 35,000. We never paid the 16,000,” he said. Councilors confirmed this meant the $35,000 would be the city’s maximum exposure for the civil scope.
Councilor Delaney moved to approve the contract with Houston Engineering; Councilor Lara seconded the motion. The council approved the contract on voice vote.
Council members asked staff to ensure contract performance and to prioritize completion so the project — a final element of an existing downtown improvement effort — could proceed to construction.
