Portsmouth council endorses resolution urging full funding for RIPTA

The Portsmouth Town Council on Aug. 12 unanimously approved a resolution urging increased and more reliable funding for the Rhode Island Public Transit Authority (RIPTA). Councilors described the action as a municipal appeal for state policymakers to address a budget shortfall the agency reported earlier this year.
Councilor (presenter) said RIPTA faced a roughly $10 million gap that could have led to steep route cuts. "A reliable transportation system is fundamental," a council sponsor said during remarks urging municipal support. The sponsor told the council the resolution would be circulated to other municipalities to press the governor and legislature for a dedicated funding mechanism.
Council discussion touched on whether RIPTA could pare service more surgically rather than across broad routes and urged the agency and state to seek sustainable revenue. After discussion the council moved and approved the resolution 7-0.
