LAUSD board member pitches family-preparedness packet, training and supports to South Gate council

Carla Gallego, LA Unified School District board member for District 5, addressed the South Gate City Council on Aug. 12 to describe district measures to keep students safe and supported as schools reopened.
"You belong here, and no one can tell you otherwise," Gallego said, urging families to use a bilingual family-preparedness packet the district is distributing to schools, libraries, parks and city halls across LAUSD.
Gallego said district staff aim to complete training on safety protocols for all school employees "wall to wall" by the end of the week or shortly thereafter — including bus drivers, teachers, aides, cafeteria staff and custodial workers — and she encouraged families to raise concerns with school principals and to attend "coffee with the principal" meetings that will be held in person and online.
She explained additional supports available to families: food deliveries through a partnership with the YMCA, transportation assistance arranged by principals and a virtual academy option for families who do not feel safe sending students to in-person classes.
"If this is not happening and you hear from family members that people are still confused about what to do to keep our students safe, please let us know," Gallego said.
Gallego also invited residents to a District 5 open house on Aug. 27 at Gage Middle School from 4 to 6 p.m. and left bilingual materials and business cards for council members and residents.
Council members welcomed Gallego's presentation. Councilmember Avalos, speaking as an educator, called the packet "a great resource," and several members asked staff to circulate a digital link to the materials via city social media.
Ending: Gallego said the district is working with the city to support students' safe return to school and urged parents and community members to contact principals or her office with questions or concerns.
