Residents criticize proposed speech restrictions and urge equity focus in Forest Lake schools

During the meeting's public comment portion, two speakers urged the board to prioritize educational equity and criticized a proposed policy that commenters said would limit community members' ability to speak at meetings.

Claire Uger identified herself and asked the board to withdraw any proposal that would prevent community members from speaking at meetings or that would allow the board to "punch" community members for speaking out of turn. She said the district's strategic plan should affirm "diversity and educational equity," and added: "Diversity is a strength. A strategic plan that includes diversity, commits us to equity and access, curriculum, staffing, and leadership." She said equity "is not a political agenda. It is a commitment to fairness, to excellence, and to preparing every student to contribute to society."

Joe Nelson, who identified himself as a long-time resident and father of two district graduates, raised concerns about racism and intolerance and said he intended to use his full three minutes. Nelson referenced past incidents he said reflected poorly on the district; meeting staff repeatedly called his remarks out of order and asked him to leave the building. The record shows Nelson attempted to finish his prepared comments but that staff interrupted and removed him from the floor for violating the meeting's rules.

Board members clarified the board's green-card public-comment procedures at the start of the meeting and reminded speakers that comments directed at individual board members were not allowed. Several trustees noted they plan to review policy 5.15 in committee and that policy will return for further discussion in September.
