County updates: Turkey Creek grading, Leadwood school sidewalks and bridge progress; $50,000 school contribution unclear

Public-works staff updated commissioners on several local infrastructure projects, including road grading, school sidewalks, and a bridge replacement.

Staff said grading on Turner Creek Road is expected to reach final dirt grade this week, with five culverts remaining to install. Work at Cherokee Landing (a shower-house slab) is complete and property owners may proceed with new construction. Crews continue riprap placement around a bridge; the bridge deck and other tests exceeded specifications (concrete testing reached or exceeded 5,500 PSI), and contractors reported favorable weather that may allow early completion.

Walking and sidewalk work near Leadwood High School and middle school is substantially complete; staff said the elementary-school sidewalk work would start soon. Commissioners asked about lighting and a previously discussed $50,000 school-district contribution toward the sidewalk project; staff said the district had earlier indicated willingness to provide $50,000 but that a final cash commitment had not yet arrived and the county remained in contact with the district.

Staff also reported maintenance items: salt-building venting will be improved with louver vents from a vendor (six weeks lead time), a new bucket truck was delivered, and the department coordinated asphalt work with a contractor to finish ADA access at a parking/sidewalk site. Commissioners asked staff to continue reporting progress and provide any outstanding budget information related to these projects.
