Family appeals to Grantsville council after apparent delay in gravesite interment

Brent Marshall, a resident, told the Grantsville City Council on Aug. 6, 2025, that his mother’s burial was not completed on July 14 and that plywood remained over the vault for days.
“I was called a little after 8 and was told that the internment was being started,” Marshall said, describing visiting the cemetery and finding the vault still covered the following morning. “This could be considered a health and safety issue. But this is pure negligence or desecration of a gravesite in my mind. Totally unacceptable.”
Marshall asked the city to draft an ordinance requiring the cemetery supervisor to superintend every internment and to “fill up and neatly trim the grave immediately after depositing the caskets.” He said the family paid for the service and requested protection to prevent future occurrences.
Mayor Neil Critslow apologized and said he would check on the matter “first thing,” and other council members asked staff to follow up. No ordinance was introduced at the meeting; council members said they would investigate and report back. A city staff member characterized the situation as acknowledged and said the burial was now completed.
