Girl Scouts of West Central Florida highlights local programming and Bronze Award project

Mary Pat King, CEO of Girl Scouts of West Central Florida, and a Polk County Girl Scout awarded the Bronze Award briefed the Polk County School Board July 29 about local participation, program outcomes and partner activities.
King said nearly 2,500 Girl Scouts in Polk County participate in programming that emphasizes STEM, life skills, outdoor education and entrepreneurship. She highlighted free Girl Scout experiences enabled by funders including United Way Central Florida and the GiveWell Foundation and mentioned Camp Wildwood and the organization’s long local history.
Darlene, a fifth grader who earned the Bronze Award, described a STEM project teaching “cloud slime,” a YouTube channel the troop launched and packets shared with STEMAPALOOZA attendees. Board members thanked the troop and Girl Scout staff and noted local partnerships and volunteer involvement.
The superintendent and board members encouraged further collaboration between Girl Scouts and the district for events, field trips and youth mentoring, and invited continued outreach on STEM and leadership programs.
