Merchants and representatives from Olvera Street invited the City Council to the 70th annual Blessing of the Animals celebration on April 22 and described it as a long-standing cultural event featuring a blessing by Cardinal Mahoney and community participation.
Samuel Luna and Emily Martinez of Olvera Street presented the invitation and emphasized the event’s cultural and historical significance; Raul R. Rodriguez, a designer associated with the Tournament of Roses Parade, said he and others support the street’s renaissance and outreach.
Separately, Councilmember Nick Pacheco recounted a neighborhood cleanup campaign across Council District 14 that organized multiple community cleanups and a large fair on April 1. Pacheco said cleanups in Highland Park, El Sereno and Eagle Rock each drew close to 300 volunteers, Boyle Heights drew about 1,100 volunteers on the festival day, and the fair attracted around 3,500 attendees. He presented certificates of appreciation to participating department staff and volunteers and credited the Board of Public Works and community partners for the campaign’s success.
Both the invitation and the cleanup recognition were ceremonial and informational; no ordinance or funding motions were presented during these remarks.
