Hyperion Treatment Plant completes full secondary startup; city cites $1 million in savings

The City of Los Angeles recognized the Hyperion Treatment Plant team for completing the startup and automation associated with a conversion to full secondary wastewater treatment.
Presenters explained that the Hyperion plant serves about 4 million residents. Under a previously entered consent decree, Hyperion was required to convert from partial to full secondary treatment; the presentation described the technical challenge of upgrading while maintaining normal operations. Secondary treatment adds biological processes that remove up to an additional 95% of remaining solids, producing effluent suitable for industrial reuse or safe discharge to Santa Monica Bay, according to the presentation.
The city said optimization and automation efforts produced daily energy and oxygen-generation savings of about $2,000 and that the in-house team beat contractor labor estimates by $270,000. The Bureau of Sanitation estimated total savings to the city of approximately $1,000,000 for the effort. The project was selected by the American Academy of Environmental Engineers to receive a superior achievement award; a city delegation planned to accept the award in Washington, D.C.
Joe Mundine, identified as Hyperion plant manager, introduced team members who contributed to process control, operations, engineering and maintenance.
