Hobbs board and community members pay tribute to longtime board member Peggy Appleton and her husband, Terry

The Hobbs Municipal Schools Board opened its Aug. 19 meeting with a prayer and a period of remembrance for longtime board member Peggy Appleton and her husband, Terry, who recently died. Board members, district leaders and family members described Appleton’s years of service as an educator, administrator and board member and spoke about her advocacy for students and staff.
Superintendent Jean Strickland said Appleton served generations of Hobbs students as an educator, administrator and board member and was known for asking direct questions of state officials and advocating for what she believed would benefit students. Multiple board members recalled Appleton’s caring approach and her role mentoring colleagues. Several board members and attendees shared personal memories and said the couple would be deeply missed.
Family members addressed the board. Terry Marie Appleton, identified as Peggy’s daughter, described her mother’s dedication to serving students and her excitement about seeking another term on the board. A family speaker recounted how Terry served as a homebound teacher and how his efforts helped students graduate.
Superintendent Strickland announced funeral arrangements: services for Terry and Peggy Appleton were scheduled for Saturday, Aug. 23, at 10:30 a.m. at Taylor Memorial Baptist Church; Peggy’s memorial service will be observed on Labor Day, Sept. 1, and the district will be closed that day. The board recessed briefly during the meeting to give attendees time to compose themselves.
Why it matters: Appleton’s long service to Hobbs schools spanned classroom instruction, administration and governance, and colleagues characterized her as an advocate for students and staff. The board used the meeting to collect community remembrances and to announce services and district observances.
