Council authorizes expedited process to appoint replacement coroner after retirement notice
Summary
Following notice of the coroner’s retirement effective Nov. 7, the council authorized HR to advertise and schedule interviews; applications will close Nov. 5 and interviews will take place at the Nov. 5 council meeting, with an interim appointment effective Nov. 8.
The Butte-Silver Bow Council of Commissioners on Oct. 15 concurred, by a 9-0 vote, to add and act on an emergency communication to appoint a replacement coroner (communication 2025-5516) after receiving notice that the incumbent planned to retire on Nov. 7.
Chairman Morgan explained the schedule: if the council approves the communication, the human resources department will advertise the coroner vacancy and accept applications through noon on Nov. 5. The council will interview qualified applicants at the Nov. 5 regular meeting and select an interim coroner; the interim appointee would take effect Nov. 8. The interim appointment is expected to last until the next canvassed election result, after which the elected coroner would serve the remainder of the term through Nov. 2026, with the regular four-year cycle continuing afterward.
Commissioner Thatcher moved to concur and place the communication on file so HR could begin recruitment and the schedule could proceed. The clerk recorded a 9-0 vote. Commissioner Thatcher and others emphasized the need to advertise promptly to ensure a qualified pool of applicants and to allow the council to conduct interviews at the Nov. 5 meeting.
