Middletown supervisors authorize $133,651 contract for pedestrian beacon at Langhorne Yardley Road

The Middletown Township Board of Supervisors voted 5-0 on Aug. 11 to authorize a contract with Armor and Sons Electric to purchase and install a rectangular rapid flashing beacon pedestrian signal at the intersection of Langhorne Yardley Road and Maple Point Drive.

A township staff presenter said the project—referred to in staff materials as the Maple Point Crossing—was funded in part by a grant the township received from the Pennsylvania Department of Community and Economic Development a few years ago. The presenter told the board the grant was for about $146,000 and that the contract for procurement and installation of the signal components is being awarded through a CoStars contract.

The presenter said pavement work, curb ramps and pavement markings associated with the crossing were authorized earlier as part of the road improvement program as an alternate item. He also noted a maintenance-and-protection-of-traffic item was omitted from the original proposal and adds roughly $3,000, bringing the total amount before the board to $133,651.

A board member moved to authorize the contract; another supervisor seconded the motion. With no public comment and no further board questions, the board voted “aye” and the motion carried 5-0.

Township staff said the Maple Point Crossing lies outside the project limits of a PennDOT improvement to Langhorne Yardley Road, which is why it was not included in that larger PennDOT work. The contract authorizes Armor and Sons Electric to supply the signal components and for township crews or contractors to complete associated pavement and accessibility work as previously authorized.
