Health department contracts lactation consultant for WIC, approves cabinetry purchase

Graham County supervisors approved two Health Department requests Aug. 4: a contract for an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) to provide WIC clinical consultations, and an office furnishings purchase to replace failing cabinets.
Haley Shoop (Health Department) asked the board to contract with Lisa Taylor, an IBCLC who works at Mount Graham Regional Medical Center, at a rate of $40 for a 30‑minute consultation. Shoop said WIC is required to have access to an IBCLC credential and that county staff do not hold that credential; the county contracts when needed and does not always use the consultant. Supervisors supported the contract as a necessary compliance step and approved it by voice vote.
Shoop also requested permission to use budgeted funds to purchase steel cabinets for the WIC office in the amount of $3,916.11. She said current cabinets are very old, doors do not work and the cabinets do not lock; the funding is in the department’s budget but not coded to the correct county account. A supervisor noted the purchase is federal funding and should not deplete the general fund; the board approved the purchase by voice vote and directed staff to proceed with the procurement and proper coding.
The board’s approvals permit the health department to execute the IBCLC consulting agreement and complete the cabinet purchase so WIC services can meet credentialing requirements and the office can secure supplies.
