East Ramapo interim superintendent unveils monthly video series, spotlights instructional coordinators and "learning walks"

Interim Superintendent Anna Ruluzco introduced a new monthly video series called "East Ramapo in Focus" and described how the district is using instructional coordinators and content directors to support classroom practice.

"Hello, East Ramapo community. I'm Anna Ruluzco, the interim superintendent, and I'm excited to introduce our new monthly video series, East Ramapo in Focus," Ruluzco said. "This is a way to keep our community informed about the big changes and progress taking place across our district. We want the East Ramapo community to know what's happening and why it matters. Through strategic investments in our people and our practices, we're building momentum and making meaningful progress step by step, paso, paso."

The video, a brief district update, emphasized investments in instructional leadership. A district administrator summarized the roles of those hires: "We're here to tell you a little bit more about some of the investments we have made here in the district, particularly our instructional coordinators and our content directors. These folks are helping us elevate instructional excellence across classrooms. Additionally, they're strengthening continuous feedback and reflective practice and investing in leadership at every level."

Speakers described "learning walks," short classroom observations led by instructional coordinators, content directors and assistant principals from neighboring buildings. A district administrator said the learning walks are being used to gather data on trends in relationships and routines and to identify where coordinators can offer coaching and feedback. "The learning walks are helping us to gather data around trends that we're seeing in the buildings around building relationships and learning routines to see where our coordinators and our content directors can provide additional coaching and feedback and support for our teaching staff," the administrator said.

Another administrator framed the approach as districtwide and collaborative, saying the district has "looped in our commitment to the long term strategic and fiscal plan and how those instructional coordinators are part of the learning walks that are taking place inside classrooms so they can help coach teachers through implementing those." A separate administrator added the district is bringing instructional coordinators and assistant principals from other buildings into neighbors' schools "so that they can see it because good teaching is good teaching," a step described as intended to create "a consistency of language and expectations" across schools.
