Community recreation director previews new CERC building, new programs and registration upgrade

Matt Gomez, director of community recreation, told the board on Oct. 8 that his department has pursued staff restructuring, program expansion for middle-school ages, adoption of a new registration platform and preparations to open the CERC facility.
Gomez said the department hired a full-time recreation coordinator to provide consistent oversight of youth sports, camps and weekend programming. He said the department added middle-school programming to better serve families with working parents and increase summer offerings; he reported a 15% increase in kids‑camp enrollment after adding that age group.
On technology and operations, Gomez said the district conducted a six-month vendor review of roughly a dozen registration systems and selected ARUCs (a vendor focusing on community education and recreation) for its integrated registration and credit-card gateway. He said the new system allows virtual sign‑in/out via iPad for childcare programs and that parents report easier registration.
Gomez described new offerings and partnerships: a girls flag-football camp that attracted more than 35 girls, two league teams (second/third grade and fourth/fifth grade), a DVR‑funded summer internship for a young man with Down syndrome who now works in the Kids Club program, and an agreement to host Diverse Grounds coffee at the CERC to provide transition program opportunities.
Gomez said the CERC building is materially complete — “we’ve got walls, we’ve got paint, we’ve got windows, we’ve got doors” — and staff are planning a move that could begin the week of Nov. 24, with a ribbon event possibly in December. He said program and staffing work remain to prepare the facility for a full schedule of public programs.
Board members asked about the registration system change, and Gomez said finance and facilities staff participated in vendor selection and that implementation is ongoing. Board members praised the newsletter and asked to be included in distribution. No formal board action or new funding was requested for the items Gomez presented.
