City staff reported Oct. 8 that City Council reviewed three options for the North–South Fair Oaks ITS deployment and approved an option that retains existing bulb‑outs and modifies curb ramps only where needed for ADA compliance.
Staff said Council "recommended option number 1," described as modifying curb ramps only if required to maintain ADA compliance while retaining the footprint of existing curb extensions. Staff presented three options: curb‑ramp modifications only; an existing design that removes corner curb extensions at four intersections; and a hybrid that reconstructed corners at all four intersections. Staff said the council directed staff to proceed with option 1 and that staff is working with the design consultant to move forward.
Commissioners asked about construction cost estimates. Staff said design cost data received to date was about $36,000, and that the project has $10,000,000 in grant funding; a definitive construction estimate is expected as design progresses toward 90%. "We have $10,000,000 grant funding, but we haven't received the construction cost estimate yet," staff said. Staff expects 90% plans by January or February 2026.
Staff noted community interest in a larger Fair Oaks corridor improvement project similar to the Fremont‑Huntington work; that would require a future grant application and separate funding.
