At its April 14, 2025, facilities meeting, the Dorchester 02 Facilities Committee received an update on community outreach and ongoing negotiations surrounding the ponds project and district site acquisition plans.
The committee chair said staff held a community information meeting the previous Monday and described turnout as "okay." The chair also reported that "Colter, penned a letter back to, both the school district as well as the county," and that county officials were not pleased with the letter. "I won't get into the, feelings that the county specifically has about that letter. But I can tell you that they're not super," the chair said (Speaker 1).
Staff said district leaders are actively discussing contingency options — described repeatedly as "Plan B" — in case the district cannot secure the property tied to the ponds project. Options under discussion include using existing sites and purchasing alternate property to accommodate students. "We're we're constant conversations in this with folks in this room, almost on daily, kicking around ideas, coming up with things," the facilities director said, adding that the timing of new classroom space at Sand Hill will help but may not fully resolve capacity pressures.
Committee members asked when to escalate contingency plans beyond Plan B. Staff said they are still pursuing the original plan while preparing alternatives and will return different plans to the facilities committee. The facilities director said negotiations with the developer date back to about 2013 and that the developer's current development agreement has been revised several times; the transcript records staff saying the developer could, under some conditions, turn over a phase to the district if a phase plan is submitted and the district were willing to accept it.
No formal action was taken. Staff said they would return to the committee with contingency options and updates on negotiations at a future meeting.
Ending: Staff will continue negotiations, develop contingency options for school capacity if the ponds/property plan cannot proceed, and bring those options back to the facilities committee.
