Indianapolis announces multimillion‑dollar MLK Gateway project; Kennedy‑King Memorial Initiative highlights youth programs and awards

Indianapolis officials and community leaders announced a city-funded renovation of the Landmark for Peace site and outlined associated community programming during a Kennedy‑King Memorial Initiative ceremony marking the anniversary of Martin Luther King Jr.'s assassination.

Don Colvin of Indy Parks said the mayor’s office “has made available $6,800,000” for what he described as the MLK Gateway project and outlined design and construction elements, including expanded plaza space around the Landmark for Peace sculpture, granite panels for storytelling, new walkway lighting, security cameras and an open pavilion to display historical photographs. Colvin said the project team includes local firms Powers and Son (project management) and AG Collaborative with Sanford Gardner (architecture and design), and he said the work could be complete “by next year, weather permitted.”
