The board chair said she spoke with the owner, who "said he was going to call us back, and he did not. He does know he has heard that his building has come to...people aren't happy with the way his building looks and that they'd like to see some improvements to it." Board members said the owner told them he was committed to improving the property but had financial and personal challenges, including a contractor dispute and a recent family bereavement.
Jerry (board member) said he and others offered the owner access to the DDA microgrant program and suggested he could seek contractors or consider alternative uses for the property such as offices. "We offered him access to the grant. We said you might wanna take an opportunity to spruce up the outside while you get the inside taken care of," Jerry said.
Board members said they would follow up with the owner and continue outreach, noting they want to help but also expect the owner to respond when contacted. The board discussed the building’s local significance and the desire to preserve and improve downtown character.
