Angola preservation commission advances outreach: single-site designation form, photo contest and Voices & Votes exhibit

Angola City Historic Preservation Commission members reviewed several outreach and program items aimed at encouraging preservation activity and public engagement, including drafting a single-site designation form, plans for a May photo contest, training workshops for building owners and a community exhibit through an Indiana Humanities grant.

Commission staff said they have collected sample single-site designation documents from other cities and have contacted the Indiana Department of Natural Resources’ historic division for confirmation. Staff indicated the next step is drafting a proposed form for Angola City and returning it to the commission for review; Deb from Landmarks provided input and confirmed the item will lead to an ordinance at a later date.

On programming, staff described a photo contest planned for Historic Preservation Month in May. Rules announced include: subject resources must be located within Steuben County and be at least 50 years old; natural-only images (for example, only a tree) are not eligible; categories will include black-and-white, color and an 18-and-under division. Main Street is supplying prize packages for winners and has granted permission to reuse submitted images for promotion.

Commissioners also discussed outreach and training for property owners. Members recommended sharing workshops and training opportunities—examples cited include masonry and carpentry workshops—and suggested coordinating promotion with the city’s website, Main Street and the monthly city newsletter. Commission staff (Allison) agreed to collect training dates and share them with the commission for wider distribution.

The commission also reported a grant award from Indiana Humanities for the Voices & Votes program. Staff said the program would support a locally assembled exhibit about the history of voting in the area in April–May 2026 and that local memorabilia donors have offered items for display. Staff will complete program training before public promotion and will coordinate with Main Street and local schools for potential field trips.

Commissioners asked staff to avoid printing dated details on general flyers (for example, exact grant dollar amounts) and recommended producing a durable informational flyer with links to resources (Indiana Landmarks, ARC, grant pages) that can be reused year-to-year.

No formal votes were recorded on these items at the meeting; commissioners agreed to return drafts and program plans to future agendas for review.
