The Board of Supervisors voted unanimously May 5 to authorize reopening the Treasurer & Tax Collector’s City Hall payment location and to set May 15, 2020, as the in‑person payment deadline for deferred property taxes.
Treasurer José Cisneros told the board that, as of the previous day, about $160 million in property tax remained unpaid across roughly 17,000 taxpayers. The city had previously deferred the April 10 deadline in response to the COVID‑19 shelter‑in‑place order; the Board’s action sets May 15 as the new deadline and reopens City Hall for limited in‑person payments.
Cisneros said the office will implement safety measures, encourage online or mailed payments where possible, and will offer a penalty‑waiver process for taxpayers who cannot pay on time because of COVID‑19 impacts. After discussion, the Board approved two technical amendments clarifying access arrangements: the Treasurer’s office will staff an outside location to direct taxpayers to the correct entrance if the main Polk Street/Carlton B. Goodlett entrance is not open, and the office will be open on May 13 and 14 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., and on May 15 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. to accept in‑person payments.
Supervisors and counsel worked with the Treasurer to add the clarifying language during the meeting; the final resolution passed unanimously.
