Board recognizes agencies and volunteers after recent Mission fires; asks departments to report on trends

Supervisors and community leaders recognized emergency responders, shelter staff and volunteers for their work after a January fire in the Mission and another recent blaze.
Supervisor Campos thanked Human Services Agency staff and Salvation Army personnel for helping secure housing for displaced residents. "Together, we were able to find housing for all 47 residents who requested help from the city," Campos said, noting 32 stayed at a Salvation Army emergency shelter.
Speakers from the Salvation Army and HSA described their roles providing shelter, food and casework. Ben Ames of HSA and Kira Barrera, HSA client-services staff, and Salvation Army captains were called forward and received commendations. "When a tragedy like a fire happens, it takes an entire community," Campos said.
Supervisor Marr said he had asked the fire department and Department of Building Inspection to report at an upcoming committee meeting on trends and data regarding causes and frequency of fires in the neighborhood and on the cost of recent fires.
The board also observed the death of pedestrian Alfred Yee in a Geary Boulevard collision and discussed Vision Zero pedestrian safety measures, including planned traffic signals and speed-limit reductions.
Ending: The board adopted commendations and asked city departments to report findings to committee; no new policy was adopted in the meeting beyond the request for departmental reports.
