Supervisor Mark Farrell introduced two amendments to the City's Retail Workers Bill of Rights intended to clarify applicability and respect collective bargaining agreements.
The first proposed amendment would change the employee threshold for locations that must comply from 20 employees to locations with at least 40 employees. The second amendment would allow collective bargaining agreements that cover employees at formula retail establishments to supersede the ordinance.
Farrell said the amendments are intended to target large formula retail establishments rather than small and mid-size businesses that may lack scheduling systems and resources. "The first amendment makes sure the policy truly targets large formula retail establishments and make sure ... small to midsize businesses ... aren't equated on the same scale," Farrell said.
He also said the collective-bargaining amendment respects negotiated agreements reached between employers and unions. Farrell and cosponsors said they will bring the amendments to committee for discussion.
Ending: The amendments were introduced for committee consideration and will be reviewed in the legislative process; no final vote occurred at the meeting.
