Mayor highlights storm response, E-911 medical dispatch and Ridge Athletic Center groundbreaking

Mayor Copenhaver opened the April 15 Jonesboro City Council meeting with updates on recent storm response, emergency dispatch operations and community events.
Citing several recent severe weather events, the mayor thanked police, fire and public works staff for their response and said the city would send personnel to assist Hardy with cleanup where needed. He also recognized Jonesboro's E-9-1-1 dispatchers and read a proclamation designating April 2025 as E-911 Dispatcher Week in Jonesboro. The mayor said that in March the city implemented an emergency medical dispatch program that allows dispatchers to provide life-saving instructions by phone, including CPR, first aid and childbirth assistance.
On community cleanup efforts, the mayor reported that the recent neighborhood cleanup at West End collected "more than 12 tons of unwanted junk and trash" and 144 tires. He also said the Mayor's Youth Advancement Council has 99 students enrolled for the coming year and that the city held a spring community fair at Northside Park.
The mayor announced the groundbreaking for a new sports complex, named the Ridge Athletic Center (referred to as "the rack" in the meeting). He said the facility will include competition gyms, swimming and diving space and volleyball courts and that two buildings on the site had already been demolished after the groundbreaking. The mayor noted a representative from Navahold was present at the meeting as work on the project continues.
Council members asked a few follow-up questions during reports: Council member Mr. McLean asked about ditch-cleaning and drainage plans in Fairview; Mayor Copenhaver said staff had been assessing and cleaning obstructions and will develop an overall plan and have staff contact the council member with an update. Dr. Anthony Coleman reminded the public that a town-hall meeting was scheduled for Thursday at 6:30 p.m. at Allen Park.
There were no public commenters at the meeting and the council adjourned after routine business.
