Burrillville honors DECA and SkillsUSA students; several to compete nationally

The Burrillville School Committee recognized members of the Burrillville High School DECA chapter and several SkillsUSA teams on April 8 for placements at the Rhode Island Career Development Conference and state SkillsUSA competitions.
Chairwoman Lacey read citations for student winners, and advisors Mary Lou Tupper and Ed Santoro joined students at the front of the meeting for a photo and formal recognition. Mr. Santoro said the trip to the DECA International Career Development Conference is an honor: "They are going to be amongst, you know, very, high level students… So this is a really it's an honor to take them. I've been doing this for a really long time and I love doing it."
Named DECA winners the committee recorded included: Alex Fristala (first place, financial consulting); Lily Farah (first place, retail merchandising); Juliet Hanrahan (first place, human resource management); Trenton Jolligan (third place, sports entertainment marketing); a team of Declan Costa, Leo Piccard and Ryan Tupper (second place, innovation plan); a team of Abigail Bassett and Skyla Kelli (third place, startup business plan); Arrow Usak (first place, restaurant food service management); Ava Lafauci (Quick Serve Restaurant management). The committee also noted other winners not present that were listed on the agenda.
The committee presented an official citation from the Burrillville School Department and wished students luck as several prepare to travel. Meeting discussion noted winners will attend the international/national DECA events in Orlando with tens of thousands of attendees from the U.S. and abroad.
Separately, the student representative and committee members recognized SkillsUSA winners from Burrillville — including teams advancing to national competitions in June — and noted the middle school robotics urban search and rescue team swept medals at the state level.
Ending: Committee members praised the student achievements and thanked advisors and families; a committee member said the students "work so hard" and expressed pride in their accomplishments.
