Vacaville warns VPAT season could shrink as city faces roughly $11 million budget shortfall
Summary
At the April 2 meeting, the Parks and Recreation Commission’s VPAT show selection committee reported that the city is projecting an approximately $11,000,000 budget shortfall and that VPAT funding is among potential reductions; committee members are exploring lower‑cost programming and asking for public recommendations.

Commissioner Bruman briefed the commission on the Vacaville Performing Arts Theater (VPAT) show selection committee and warned that the city’s projected budget shortfall could reduce the number of city‑sponsored shows this year.
“One of the challenges that we're going to face this year is that...the city's upcoming budget is projecting a about $11,000,000 shortfall,” Commissioner Bruman said, and added that VPAT show funding was among possible reductions under consideration. Bruman said the proposed cuts are not final and that the committee is exploring lower‑cost alternatives such as a speaker series or podcast format to preserve programming while controlling costs.
Bruman asked the public and commissioners for recommendations of performers or program formats that might be cost effective. He also highlighted an upcoming Persistence Hall Jazz Band performance and said subscriptions and social channels are available for updates.
Director Mulder and other staff later placed the VPAT situation in a broader budget context: the city held a council priority session where departments were asked to identify options to address the shortfall. Mulder said fee studies and additional outreach meetings on development and facility fees are planned in the coming months.
No final decisions were made at the commission meeting; staff said public input and further council direction will determine whether, and which, VPAT shows are reduced.
