Canfield Police Chief Michael Colucci reported to council that the department received a Justice Assistance Grant (JAG) for $15,500 to purchase breaching tools and that the city was awarded more than $30,000 from a state body-worn camera grant program.
"We received JAG grant in the total of $15,500," Chief Colucci said, noting the funds would buy breaching tools so officers can make entries without damage and reduce dependency on fire department equipment. Colucci credited Officer Tim Koehler with initiating the grant application.
Colucci said the department applied for a $129,000 body-camera grant and was approved for more than $30,000, which staff will use to begin a phased upgrade of aging camera equipment rather than replacing all devices at once. He said the department will coordinate with the city's IT staff on a transition plan.
Chief Colucci also announced the promotion of Officer Chad Barr and noted the department's ongoing efforts to outfit cruisers with updated tools and equipment.
Councilors recognized the officers and the department's grant efforts during the meeting.
