Canfield council authorizes city manager to apply for beer-and-wine permits for summer and fall festivals

Canfield City Council authorized the city manager to apply for F-1 and F-2 permits from the Ohio Department of Commerce Division of Liquor Control to permit the sale of beer and wine at two city events: Family Fun Night on Aug. 4, 2025, and Fall Fest on Oct. 4, 2025.

The motion, read by Council member Tisch and moved for passage by a councilor during the meeting, was seconded and then discussed. Councilors clarified that the permits would cover sales of beer and wine (not distilled spirits). Council members and other volunteers have previously sold tickets for beverages and then taken the tickets to an approved vendor for redemption; a councilor said last year council volunteers sold tickets and attendees redeemed them at a vendor on site. One councilor asked whether police officers would be involved in selling tickets; councilors said they would not.

A councilor raised the proximity of event locations to nearby churches, noting liquor-control rules consider distances to churches and other establishments. Staff said the application includes a map showing nearby businesses and churches and that the state reviews proximity as part of the permit process. Council emphasized that they would not proceed without state approval.

Councilors voted to authorize the city manager to apply for the permits; the transcript records the motion and seconds and indicates affirmative responses during roll-call for procedural authorizations to read and proceed. The authority granted is to submit applications to the Division of Liquor Control; final approval of the permits is subject to state review and approval.
