Parent presses board on AlphaBEST aftercare selection; board to share evaluation matrix

During the public-comment period of the Glen Ridge Public School District Board of Education meeting, resident Rachel Bridal identified herself as the parent of two Linden Avenue students and raised concerns about the district’s selection of a vendor for before- and after-care services.
Bridal said she had previously raised “troubling lapses” in the AlphaBEST aftercare program for the 2023–24 school year and welcomed superintendent follow-up. She said the district received five proposals in response to a request for proposals and that AlphaBEST had been selected “pending board approval tonight.” Bridal said parents who use and pay for the service had not been given information on the five proposals or asked for feedback, and she asked the board what criteria were used to evaluate proposals.
Bridal asked specifically whether prior state inspection reports had been considered or would be allowed to be considered in the selection process. She said she would “feel more comfortable putting my children in the aftercare program if more of this type of information was shared ahead of the board’s action.”
The board responded during later roll call and item discussion. A board official (Barbara) said she had “an evaluation matrix that I’m happy to share,” and a board member (Betsy) later noted on the record that Barbara would share the rubric for selection of aftercare programs with the parent.
The vendor-selection item was part of the business agenda (B items) approved later in the meeting; the roll call recorded the motion as carrying. The public comment and the board’s commitment to share the evaluation matrix were recorded on the meeting minutes and on the public record.
No public vote was triggered by the comment itself; the comment requested greater transparency and inspection of selection criteria. The board committed to sharing the evaluation matrix and to making additional information available to the parent who asked for it.
