The Torrington City Council on April 1 approved revised 2025 rates for the municipal swimming pool and granted a one‑year waiver of the city’s nepotism policy for the seasonal pool staff identified by management.
Under the approved fee schedule, a family pass for up to four members is $175 for the season; families with five or more members will pay $225. The city consolidated the adult and student (18 and under) categories into a single “individual” season pass priced at $80. Senior passes are $60. The adult swim/aerobics punch card was changed to 30 punches for $75 (previously 20 punches), and swim lessons will remain $30 per child per week. Pool party fees remain unchanged ($175 for up to 50 people; $200 for groups over 50).
Clerk‑Treasurer Lynette Strecker said the last rate change occurred in 2021 and stressed the city’s goal of keeping the pool affordable. Pool manager Jennifer Bridal provided usage data from 2024 showing season passes sold: 60 family (<5) passes, 16 family (5+) passes, 18 senior, two adult season passes and 14 student passes; 11 pool parties took place in 2024. Council discussed staffing levels and minimum lifeguard requirements for parties; Strecker said parties require at least two guards and manager oversight.
Council also voted to waive the nepotism policy for the 2025 season to permit one assistant pool manager to employ her son as a lifeguard. Staff said they will attempt to avoid overlapping shifts but, if necessary, Jennifer Bridal will supervise and manage potential conflicts.
Councilman Victorin moved to approve the 2025 rates; Councilman Warren seconded. A separate motion to waive the nepotism policy for 2025 was moved by Councilman Diehl and seconded by Councilman Kelly; both motions passed unanimously.
