South Prairie proposing 'Kickstart' kindergarten pilot to even class balances and readiness

South Prairie Elementary principal Patty Morris and her kindergarten team presented a plan March 31 to pilot a kindergarten "Kickstart" program in fall 2025 to help balance classes and support students who enter kindergarten without preschool experience.
The proposal: During the first week of school students would rotate through multiple classrooms on Monday and Tuesday to allow teachers to observe skills and behaviors; Wednesday would be a non-attendance day for kindergartners so teachers could finalize class lists and prepare classrooms; Thursday would be the first day in assigned classes and Friday a regular full day. Parents would meet teachers during the district open house prior to the classroom assignment.
Why it matters: The South Prairie team said 35–39 percent of incoming kindergarten students in recent years had not attended DCG preschool, a figure they said makes classroom balancing difficult at the start of the year. The pilot aims to create more equitable and developmentally appropriate class placements and to give teachers more data for first-grade placements.
Logistics and considerations
Instructional coach Elise Webb described operational protocols the team plans to use: an “all hands on deck” staffing approach for drop-off and transitions, colored wristbands and name tags for identification during rotations, community-supplies stored centrally and distributed to classrooms on Thursday, and a single open-house event for kindergarten families. The team said they will coordinate transportation plans and worked with other districts that have run similar pilots to anticipate pitfalls.
Principal Patty Morris told the board the plan emerged after conversations with neighboring districts and administrators. Morris said the school currently has five kindergarten teachers and that the pilot would use existing building resources including the intervention and encore teams as extra hands during the first days.
Questions from board and public
Board members asked about family impacts of the Wednesday non-attendance day and whether daycare options would be needed; presenters said districts that tried daycare found it underutilized and that the school would notify families well in advance and work with individual families with extenuating needs. The board requested a follow-up report after the pilot year to assess impact.
