He described investments the sheriff’s office has made in training and equipment, including what he said is a $75 million training center.
Toney acknowledged the community’s loss of trust when tragedies occur and said he “owned it from day 1” in the current homicide investigation, pledging a “high level of accountability” when investigative facts are complete. He said decisions about any disciplinary actions would be made by him alone after investigators deliver their findings: “When all the facts and things are developed and placed on my desk, it is my decision and my decision alone to make in terms of what level of accountability any of these deputies will take who have failed this community.”
Toney told the commission that the sheriff’s office has made multiple employee terminations in the past when warranted and asked for continued patience while the ongoing investigation concludes. He also thanked the commission for its longstanding partnership with BSO.
The remarks were delivered during the meeting’s opening remarks and no formal action was taken by the commission on the sheriff’s statements.
