Superintendent highlights donations, hospital sponsorship and community support as school year begins

Superintendent Adam Hartman used his report to thank community partners and volunteers who provided material support as Canyon City Schools begins the 2025–26 year.
Hartman described a recent delivery of prepared backpacks, each tagged with a specific student and containing items beyond basic school supplies, and identified the organizing group as Fremont First. He said the district found high-quality donated items including over-the-ear headphones and aluminum water bottles among the backpacks.
Hartman also credited CommonSpirit at St. Thomas More: he said Mike Cafosa, the hospital CEO, helped bring the "COPE" (Cost of Poverty Experience) program to district staff and that the hospital paid $22,500 to the district to support that experiential learning opportunity. Hartman thanked Sunwest Credit Union and Shepherd of the Hills for additional support — for example, donations that help the school nurses keep supplies on hand — and said the district continues to receive unsolicited generosity from local groups.
Board members and administrators also described a recent tour of district building projects and commended operations and facilities staff who worked weekends to prepare buildings. Several board members praised staff for hiring and onboarding new teachers, and administrators noted a busy start to the year with continuing construction and building finishes.
Hartman said the district’s strategic plan and core beliefs are informing decisions and that the opening events left him "filled with pride."
