Committee recommends advise and consent for Jensen Kalama Choq to Kahoʻolawe commission

The Senate Committee on Water and Land on April 11 voted to advise and consent to the nomination of Jensen Kalama Choq to the Kahoʻolawe Island Reserve Commission for a term ending June 30, 2029.

Members of Protect Kahoʻolawe ʻOhana and other supporters testified on behalf of Choq. Kanoilani Stewart of Lahaina described Choq as a leader grounded in ʻike Hawaiʻi and noted his experience as a kuaʻālaakaʻi and teacher on restoration voyages. Several written communications filed with the committee also expressed support.

Choq told the committee that his service has been a lifelong practice and that he wished to continue building connections to the island through restoration and cultural education. Committee members thanked him for his willingness to serve.

The committee recorded its recommendation to advise and consent; no amendments were made and the nomination will proceed to the full Senate.
