The Moorhead City Council on Sept. 22 approved a resolution authorizing the sale of city-owned land and building at 118 Fifth Street South, the current Moorhead Public Library building. The council opened and closed a public hearing on the proposed sale and voted to approve the resolution.
Assistant City Manager Mike Reetz said the existing library building was constructed in 1962 and will be vacated once a new library and community center under construction opens in spring 2026. Reetz said the city published notice to accept offers on the property; proceeds from the sale are to be placed into the city's building improvement fund to address capital facility needs, consistent with a prior council resolution on the use of sale proceeds.
No members of the public spoke during the public hearing. The council approved the sale resolution on a motion by Council member Chuck Hendrickson; the resolution carried without roll-call detail recorded in the transcript.
City staff noted the sale proceeds are one-time revenue and reminded the council that one-time funds are typically used for one-time expenses rather than recurring operating costs. Council members asked clarifying questions about the disposition process and timing tied to the opening of the new library and community center.
