A handgun found in a girls’ restroom inside the Twinsburg High School stadium field house prompted the Twinsburg City School District to notify families and increase police presence at school events, Superintendent Steve Marlow said during the board’s public meeting.
“While cleaning a girl's restroom in a stadium field house, a custodian found a handgun in a sanitary dispenser, and the custodian immediately notified the supervisor and the police department. The police department removed the handgun and are continuing to investigate the situation,” Superintendent Steve Marlow said.
Marlow told the board the district believes the handgun was placed sometime between Saturday morning’s junior varsity football game and the end of Saturday youth football games. The district said law enforcement is investigating and that it will maintain increased officer presence around school buildings and events.
Board President Crawford — identified in the meeting as the board president — and Marlow both said the district is taking additional security steps for the upcoming Friday night home football activities, including adding district security liaisons at gates and prohibiting backpacks and athletic bags from entering the stadium.
The district also said Channel 3 crews will be on site beginning at 5 a.m., gates will open at 5:30 p.m. and administrators will staff both gates. Marlow urged anyone who sees something suspicious to report it, saying the district was acting “out of an abundance of caution” and asking families to cooperate with the temporary restrictions.
The board did not announce arrests or identify a suspect during the meeting; Marlow said the police investigation is ongoing and did not provide a timeline for its conclusion.
The announcement came as the board opened its regular meeting; Marlow and President Crawford both said they and district staff would continue to brief families as more information becomes available.
