Housing authority staff told the board they received an emergency safety and security grant of approximately $250,000 to fund safety improvements at three properties, though the award will not cover all the items the authority requested.
"We did get an announcement on Friday about receiving the emergency safety grant... They awarded us about $250,000," the Housing Director said, adding that costs for cameras alone would consume the entire allocation. Staff said the primary focus will be on installing lighting and fences around backyards and play areas at Mickey, Madison and Riverside.
The authority previously applied for a package of improvements that included fences, play-area security and cameras; staff said the grant amount allows for targeted upgrades but not the full scope sought. Commissioners were told site-based safety committee meetings are planned to coordinate work and resident input.
