Dr. Galusi said the district is trying to reduce delays in placing students into classrooms and noted some students remain in a "TBD" enrollment status while they complete English learner (ELL) testing, special-education placement procedures, or meet medical requirements. She said Direct Da Silva and the enrollment team are working with families so those administrative steps do not needlessly delay a student starting school.
Committee members asked questions about kindergarten demand and special-education timelines. Dr. Galusi said the district added a fifth kindergarten section at some schools this year where demand required it and listed current section counts discussed in the meeting: Roberts (5 sections), Brooks (5), Mistsatuck (4), and McLennan (4). She emphasized these counts are subject to change as registrations continue. Member Rousseau and others pointed to a roughly 25-student net decrease compared with last year's October snapshot and asked staff to supply final October 1 figures after the state submission.
Members asked about special-education placement timelines. Dr. Galusi said the district has been working to shrink those timelines and is aiming for placements to proceed quickly, with a stated target of ``no more than three days'' in many cases; she indicated actual times vary by individual needs and would be provided in more detail to the committee.
The superintendent and committee also noted a decline in enrollment among ELL families in the early snapshot and said staff will report back with more detailed breakdowns (by school and grade) and further analysis of student departures and destinations.
