County board follows planning commission, denies request to expand lodging use at Highway 61 property

The Wabasha County Board voted to follow the Planning Commission’s recommendation and deny an amendment to a conditional use permit that would have allowed a lodging establishment at properties located at 7980 and 7984 Highway 61 in Lake City.
Planning staff reported that, after a March public hearing, the Planning Commission voted 5-0 to recommend denial. The commission cited four findings: the use would be injurious to the enjoyment of nearby property and could reduce nearby property values; it could impede normal and orderly development of surrounding vacant property; adequate utilities, access roads, drainage and erosion control measures had not been demonstrated; and factors bearing on public health, safety and welfare supported denial.
A commissioner moved to follow the Planning Commission recommendation to deny the amendment to the conditional use permit requested by Thomas Rothering; the motion was seconded and the board voted to carry the recommendation. The board did not adopt additional findings other than those reported by planning staff and the Planning Commission.
The action leaves the conditional use permit amendment denied; the applicant may pursue other administrative or legal options permitted under county procedures and state law.
