Hardee County students honored; Jacqueline Brown to compete at international science fair

The Hardee County School Board on April 10 recognized student performers and science-fair winners, including Jacqueline Brown, who the board was told will advance to the International Science and Engineering Fair.
Board member Miss Cornell opened the recognitions by inviting two junior-high students who had sung the national anthem at recent games to perform for the board. "They never faltered. They never showed any bit of stress or angst," Miss Cornell said, praising the students for representing the schools.
A student who identified herself to the board before singing said, "I didn't think I would be able to sing, like, in front of people, but the first time I did it, I was kinda nervous. But, like, I prayed and it, like, just happened. And I just wanna say thank you for, letting me do this." The board thanked the students for the performance.
After the anthem, the board recognized science-fair participants from district schools. Staff member Mr. Beatty and teacher Daphne Hayes announced students who advanced from local to regional competition, then to state. The board was told that 25 projects were selected from the local fair to move to regional competition. Names announced for regional representation included Jacqueline Brown, Dolce Borrego, Juan Plata, Reagan Albreton, Ross Rivas, Madeline Hernandez Jose, Alexis Badillo, Jackie Vilafuerta Arroyo, Janelle McDuffie, Peyton May, Isabella Miranda, Mackenzie Parks, Amari Pretto, Clarissa Reschke, Marley Suther, Bridal Thomas, Genesee Trevino, Kylie Workman, Sydney Yang, Victor Carrera, Esmerelda Cortez Cruz, Milagros Covarrubias, Valencia, Christopher Diemer, Carly Garza, and Mikaela Lee.
The board heard that several regional competitors received awards: Reagan Albreton received a NASA award and an award from the Hernando association (as reported by staff), Ross Bridal received the Stockholm Junior Water Award, and Jackie Vilafuerta received an award from the Yale Science and Engineering Association. From the regional pool, district staff named Reagan Albreton, Bill Sabirego, Jacqueline Brown, Juan Plata and Ross Rivas as students who advanced to state-level competition; Madeline Hernandez Jose and Alexis Padillo were identified as alternates.
Jacqueline Brown was identified by staff as the student who will advance to the International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF). The board was told ISEF rotates locations and that the competition draws students from across the world.
Board members thanked teachers and staff for preparing students. "Thank you for the work that you did to put into those science projects," one board member said when addressing a teacher involved with the participants.
The recognitions portion concluded with the board inviting students and staff to take photos and receive certificates.
A list of students and the awards announced were provided to the board during the meeting; some students named were not present at the meeting, and staff noted that a few were at other events.
